Blog: What's that? A brake duct opening?

We had some thoughts regarding the brake duct openings on the Autokonexion widebody kit's front bumper.  The first thought was, "hey, that looks a perfect fit for a 32oz. Big Gulp!"  The second thought was, should we add real brake ducts that run all the way to the rotor surface?  We checked the insane steering angle that the Secret Element Super Angle tie rods allowed, and couldn't really find much space for 4" or 3" hose.  We also saw the huge (and super heavy) 11" VW Corrado brake rotors and Carbotech XP12 brake pads up front and thought, "ya, those should hold up just fine on most tracks."  The third thought we had was, should we run ducting to the radiator?  The Setrab oil cooler and intercooler, being in front of the radiator, were causing reduced air flow to the radiator.  With the new 55mm Koyo radiator and revamped cooling system, we hadn't noticed any overheating problems...yet.  Plus, allowing air to enter through that opening would create a low pressure region just ahead of the bumper canards.  That would not be good for aero.  No no no.  That would be bad for aero!  This brought us to our fourth and final thought:  Let's plug the hole!  So that was what we did.

We made circular plates (in carbon fiber of course) to cover up the openings from inside, and made them as "bolt-in" pieces so we could easily remove them in case we ever do experience brake fade on a braking-intensive aero-not-intensive track (i.e. Auto Club Speedway Infield).  No more cardboard and blue painter's tape!

Blog: 15x9 wheels and 275/35R15 Hoosier A6

Picked up the my new set of 15x9 Gen.2 6UL wheels from 949 Racing on Thursday, and had the 275/35R15 Hoosier A6 take-offs mounted to the new wheels.  The wheels are painted in some kind of semi-matte black color.

Dirty and wet from the tire mounting lubricant:

So, not including the various mounted 14" tires/wheels combos (no point talking about those), unmounted 14" and 15" tires, my collection of mounted 15" tire/wheel combos now consists of:

949racing 6UL Gen.2 15x9 +36 wheels + Hoosier A6 275/35R15 tires
949racing 6UL Gen.1 15x8 +36 wheels + Toyo RA1 225/50R15 tires
Team Dynamics Pro Race 1 15x7 +30 wheels + Hoosier A3S03 225/45R15 tires

See more pics of the newly-mounted 15x9 below...

Blog: Visit to West End Alignment

Brought the car out to Darin Nishimura at West End Alignment yesterday.  Got new alignment, ride-height, and corner-balance adjustments & settings.  The last time this was done was when the car was still a stock-looking daily driver.

The new settings are available for viewing here.

Arrival (by trailer of course! :P):

The car weighed in porkier than we expected.  The roll-cage really helped the car pack on the weight.  It's also a lot lower now.  Keep in mind that these fender arches in the Autokonexion widebody kit are taller and wider than the OEM fender arches, so we can't use the fender to wheel center height comparisons against a stock-bodied Miata...perhaps we could measure from the frame to the ground, but then it would be hard to compare due to different tire diameters from car to car.  We know we've lost some suspension travel there...let's hope the aero benefits will far outweigh any problems we might have when the road gets rough or the burms get too big!

Blog: Passenger window net??

Got a new passenger window net today.  Take a look...

Don't see it?  Take a closer look...

Some will say that spider silk has greater tensile strength than steel.  This one's got full coverage of the passenger window opening.  Looks like it could be an awesome setup!  Don't you think so?
